Minnesota Golden Gophers

The University of Minnesota's college sports team is the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The university fields both men's and women's basketball, cross-country gymnastics, golf, ice hockey, swimming, tennis, and track and field teams. The men's team is basically baseball, football, and wrestling. The women's team is basically rowing, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Joel Maturi has been the Athletic Director since 2002.

In the men's and women's ice hockey, the Golden Gophers belong to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Also in all other sports, they belong the Big Ten Conference. The facilities that the teams use for competitive play and practice are located on the East Bank of the Minneapolis campus. The Williams Arena is used for men's and women's basketball as well as Mariucci and Ridder Arenas being used for hockey. TCF Bank Stadium opened in 2009 and is the home of the Minnesota Golden Gophers Football team, the state of the art outdoor football stadium is one of the most expensive builiding on campus but is a fan favorite for sports venues at the University of Minnesota.

The cheerleaders, dance team and the U of M's marching band are also parts of the university's athletic department; they are present at events for basketball, football, hockey, and volleyball.  In 1880, the U of M was preparing for spring graduation. For the previous 29 years, different graduation colors were used every ceremony. In spring 1880, President Folwell began a tradition of common school colors at the U. He asked an English instructor, Mrs. Augusta Smith, to select proper colors to use for graduation ribbons and other occasions. She decided on maroon and gold, which made a favorable impression on the students and faculty in 1880. As the years have continued on, maroon and gold have become the schools colors. The school songs for the U include Minnesota Rouser, Minnesota March, Go Gopher Victory, Our Minnesota, Minnesota Fight, Hail! Minnesota, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. The U's mascot if Goldy Gopher and he is mascot to 23 varsity teams.

During the 2006-2007 academic year, the Golden Gophers wrestling team won the NCAA national championship and the Big Ten team title. Golden Gophers also won conference championships in men's golf, men's hockey, men's swimming and diving, women's indoor track and field and women's rowing.
