With 30 teams competing in the NBA, playoff slots can be hard to come by.  The NBA playoffs are structured as a best of seven elimination tournament that takes place among teams in the Eastern and Western divisions.  After weeks of playing time, the teams are gradually weeded out to a final four who make it to the NBA Conference Finals.

The division brackets were changed in 2004 to accomodate the addition of the Charlotte Bobcats, the NBA's 30th team.  Now both conferences host 3 divisions with 5 teams in each division.  If a team won the division, then that team earned a spot in the top-three playoffs.  Throughout the 1980s, the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics were the strongest teams competing for NBA playoff spots.  The 1990s were known for the prowess of the Chicago Bulls, and some have dubbed this time period the "Michael Jordan Era". Since 1999, the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs have captured 7 of 10 NBA finals championships.
