Washington Wizards

Wizards Jerseys like this one can almost always be spotted on fans on Washington Wizards Game Days

The Washington Wizards have seen so many cities and team names around the years that it's nearly dizzying to keep up: Chicago Packers, Baltimore Bullets, Capital Bullets, Washington Bullets, and finally, the Washington Wizards.  This last and current nickname was created in 1997 in response to an open invitation for fans to submit entries for a name change.  At that point, the Washington Bullets' nickname was perceived to be very violent and a more pleasant nickname was needed.  The choices were narrowed to the Dragons, Express, Stallions, Sea Dogs, or Wizards and, of course, Wizards eventually won out.

The Washington Wizards drew attention in early 2000 as Michael Jordan bought into the team, then announced his decision to come out of retirement and play for the team.  He continued on for two seasons and was abruptly fired in 2003 by the Wizard's biggest owner.  Over the last few years, the Washington Wizards have done decently well.  They even made it to the NBA playoffs in 2006.
