GREG BUCKNER PLAYS FOR THE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES.
Greg Buckner was born on September 16, 1976 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Buckner was acquired by the Minnesota Timberwolves on September 29, 2007 in a trade with the Dallas Mavericks. In 21.5 minutes a game this season with the Wolves, Buckner is averaging 5.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists. His shooting has not been up to par this season, as he is going .383 percent from the field and only .286 from the three-point arc.
Just last season, Greg Buckner had a career year, starting 27 games while averaging 6.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and a career-high 1.19 steals in only 24.1 minutes a game. Buckners solid defense makes him an attractive option to start, as he can spur a good defensive start to a game.
As an eight-year pro, Greg Buckner has averaged 5.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.9 steals a game in his career. Buckner’s value is similar to that of Trenton Hassell, whom the Wolves traded to acquire Buckner. Both are solid defenders who will bury the open jumper.
Greg Buckner attended Clemson University and led his team in scoring for four-straight years, the first Clemson Tiger to do so. He also set a school record for consecutive games started with 122. Buckner sits behind only Elden Campbell and Butch Zatezalo in career scoring at Clemson.
Buckner could be the victim of a contract buyout by the T-Wolves, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Minnesota has 16 guaranteed contracts on their roster, and the NBA maximum is 15, so they are going to have to get rid of one player before the start of the season and Buckner seems the most likely option since the Wolves are trying to get younger. Buckner's agent seemed confident that the Wolves would keep him because a buyout would be expensive for Minnesota. "I'm here right now as a part of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and I want to win. If they don't want to do that, and they want to send me somewhere else and buy me out or whatever, that's their prerogative," Buckner said.
