Darrell Kurt Rambis was born February 25, 1958 in Cuerpotina, California. After playing high school and college basketball, Kurt Rambis was drafted into the NBA in 1980 to the New York Knicks as the 58th overall pick. Kurt Rambis was waived by the Knicks before he played however, after leaving to play in the Greek League for AEK Athens BC. Playing under the name Kyriakos Rambidis, he won the Greek Cup in 1981. After leaving Greece he was resigned to the Knicks but never played a game because he was subsequently signed to the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent 14 seasons with the LA Lakers and won championships in 82, 85, 87, 88.

After ending his career as a player, Kurt Rambis was briefly the coach of the LA Lakers during the 1999 lockout season where he accumulated a record of 24-13. After the Lakers hired a full-time head coach, Kurt Rambis stayed as an assistant coach, developing his skills as a leader from the sidelines. On August 8, 2009 Kurt Rambis was announced as the new head coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves agreeing to a 4 year contract .
