Lee was born in Riverside, California. He attended John. W. North High School. Prior to his work in the NBA, Lee was a strong presence on the UCLA basketball court.

Lee was drafted in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft. Lee was picked 43rd overall by the Chicago Bulls. Lee was traded on draft night to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Lee was signed to a three-year guaranteed contract.
